Arrowtown là thành phố mọc lên thời cơn sót vàng trong vùng Otego vào giữa thế kỷ 19 vừa qua. Nó được thành lập vào năm 1862. Khoảng 60 căn nhà cổ vẫn còn giữ lại được ngày nay, giúp thành phố phảng phất dáng dấp thời xa xưa, thơ mộng lắm. Đúng đây là một thành phố lịch sử đáng xem.
Đặc biệt ở đây có nhà của người da trắng và người Hoa, cho thấy phần nào thực trạng đời sống của họ mấy trăm năm trước, hay lắm. Arrowtown nằm cách thành phố Queenstown khoảng 20 phút lái xe.

Khi đến thăm thành phố Queenstown, vợ chồng tôi đã đến thăm viếng Arrowtown, thành phố của những người đào vàng ngày xưa.
Ở đây còn giữ nhà cửa bằng cây như thời xa xưa, đặc biệt lắm. Thời vàng son, ở đây có 7000 người sanh sống. Vào những năm trong thập niên 1960, ở đây chỉ còn 200 người. Ngày nay dân số ở đây đã lên trở lại ở mức 2000 người. Bây giờ đây là một thành phố du lịch giống như trong phim cao bồi Hollywood thời “Cơn Sốt Vàng” (Gold Rush) ngày xưa ở Mỹ.

Arrowtown là một thành phố lịch sử được bảo tồn giữ lại dáng vẻ ngày xưa. Ở đây người ta còn giữ lại một số nhà của di dân Âu Châu và Trung Quốc đã đến đây ở để đào mỏ vàng. Bảo tàng viện “Lakes District” và tiệm của Ah Lum nằm ở đây. “Ah Lum” là một người Trung Quốc đã đến đây lập nghiệp từ thời cơn sốt vàng.

Arrowtown nằm cách thành phố Queenstown khoảng 20 phút lái xe. Đường Buckingham là đường chánh của thành phố này. Đây là trung tâm lịch sử của thành phố, với nhiều kiến trúc cổ xưa rất đẹp và thơ mộng.
Tiệm của Ah Lum ở Arrowtown. “Ah Lum” là một người Hoa đến đây lập nghiệp từ thời cơn sốt vàng.
Trước cửa tiệm chạp phô của Ah Lum có một cầu tiêu dành riêng cho phụ nữ da trắng đến đây mua trà Tàu dùng. Người Hoa dùng cầu tiêu thô sơ hơn.
Chòi này để di dân người Hoa dùng, mỗi chòi có thể ngủ 6 người. Đời sống khổ quá.
