TSS Earnslaw là một chiếc tàu chạy bằng hơi (Steam ship) già nhất còn hoạt động ở Nam Bán Cầu. Tàu này già 101 tuổi. Tân Tây Lan vừa tổ chức mừng sinh nhật 100 tuổi của nó hồi năm ngoái.
Đây là tàu lớn nhất và được du khách thích nhất hiện đang chạy trong hồ Wakatipu ở Queenstown. Tàu được biệt danh “Lady of the lake” (Người đẹp của hồ Wakatipu). Các bạn chắc đã thấy bóng dáng tàu này trong một cuốn phim của Indiana Jones năm 2008, tựa đề “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull“.
Trong suốt thời gian phục vụ của nó, nó đã từng chở nhiều nhân vật nổi tiếng thế giới như Nữ hoàng Elizabeth, Ông hoàng Philip, Vua và Hoàng hậu nước Bỉ (Belgium), và Hoàng Tử Thái Lan (Thailand). Vợ chồng tôi đã đi tàu này viếng hồ Wakatipu và trại chăn trừu Walter Peak. Một chuyến tàu lịch sử.
Tàu được đưa vào hoạt động từ năm 1912 để chuyên chở du khách và hàng hóa trên hồ Wakatipu. Tàu được đóng ở hãng đóng tàu lớn nhất Tân Tây Lan thuộc thành phố Dunedin. Đóng xong, người ta phải tháo gỡ từng mảnh sắt để chuyên chở về hồ Wakatipu ráp lại. Một công trình lớn lao.
Tên của tàu xưa cũ này là TSS Eanslaw. Earnslaw là tên của một đỉnh núi cao nhất nằm trên bờ hồ Wakatipu. Núi này cao 2889 thước. Tàu nầy dài 51.2 thước và là tàu lớn nhất chạy trong hồ Wakatipu từ năm 1912 đến nay. Chưa có tàu nào lớn hơn được đưa đến đây thay thế.

Ngày khánh thành chiếc tàu này, đích thân Bộ Trưởng Hàng Hải của Tân Tây Lan đã đến đây lái tàu chạy một vòng trên hồ Wakatipu. Mặc dầu già 101 tuổi tàu vẫn chạy 14 tiếng một ngày suốt mùa hè và chạy 11 tháng trong năm.
