New Zealand: Đi cruise trên hồ Wakatipu

Hồ Wakatipu ở Queenstown Tân Tây Lan (New Zealand) là một hồ nội địa (Inland lake) nằm giữa vùng núi phía Nam đảo Nam (South Island). Đây là hồ dài nhất nước này, dài 80 cây số, và hồ lớn hạng ba New Zealand với diện tích 291 cây số vuông. Hồ này rất đẹp.

Wakatipu là tiếng của thổ dân Maori. Theo truyền thuyết của Maori hồ này là bối cảnh của một chuyện tình đáng thương của công chúa sắc tộc này. Lãnh tụ của Maori có một người con gái, đã thầm yêu một chàng trai con nhà nghèo. Mối tình này là mối tình tuyệt vọng vì giai cấp, Lãnh tụ không thể nào chấp nhận được.

Một ngày nọ công chúa bị một người khổng lồ hung dữ bắt giữ. Lãnh tụ hứa ai cứu được công chúa ông sẽ gả con gái cho. Chàng hiệp sĩ người yêu của công chúa cứu được Nàng, và họ sống hạnh phúc với nhau.

Theo tiếng Maori Wakatipu có nghĩa là “thuyền đang lớn lên” (Growing canoe). Có người nói Wakatipu có nghĩa là “Vịnh đang lớn lên” (Growing Bay). Theo truyền thuyết của người Maori, khi người ta đốt xác người khổng lồ, lửa cháy đã tạo nên một khoảng trống sâu 400 thước, và khi tuyết tan nước đã chạy vô lổ trống nầy tạo nên hồ Wakatipu.

Đọc lướt qua những bài viết của người Việt Nam đã từng thăm viếng hồ này, tôi thấy tất cả đều đồng ý hồ này rất đẹp, nước trong xanh, cảnh vật núi non bao quanh hồ rất hữu tình. Có người còn nói đây là nơi lý tưởng hưởng tuần trăng mật với người tình trăm năm.

Sau khi thăm viếng Sydney vợ chồng tôi bay đi Queenstown Tân Tây Lan, và thăm viếng vùng này trong 3 ngày. Đây là một thành phố du lịch nổi tiếng thế giới, nằm bên bờ hồ Wakatipu ở phía Nam đảo Nam (South Island).

Hồ Wakatipu nổi tiếng đẹp ở nước Tân Tây Lan. Đây là một hồ nước hình chữ Z, do sông băng tạo ra trước đây, hai bên hồ là những ngọn núi “The Remarkables“, “Cecil Peak” và “Walter Peak“. Hồ này rất sâu. Nằm trên độ cao 310 thước, nó sâu đến 380 thước, như vậy sâu hơn mực nước biển 70 thước.

Vợ chồng tôi được đi tàu ngắm cảnh trên hồ Wakatipu nầy. Chiếc tàu vợ chồng tôi đi là một chiếc tàu lịch sử rất xưa cũ tên TSS Earnslaw. Đây là tàu chạy bằng hơi nước đã từng chạy trong hồ Wakatipu từ năm 1912. Đây là tàu chạy bằng than và hơi nước còn sót lại của thế kỷ 20 trên Nam Bán Cầu. Chính vì vậy du khách đến đây ai cũng muốn đi thử tàu này.

Đoàn du khách chúng tôi đi du thuyền trên tàu này từ bến tàu Queenstown (Queenstown’s Wharf) đến một trại nuôi trừu ở Walter Peak (Đỉnh Walter). Trại nảy rất độc đáo. Như các bạn biết trừu đã được thuyền trưởng Cook đưa tới New Zealand vào năm 1773. Từ đó việc chăn nuôi trừu trở thành phát đạt. Ngày nay nước này là một trong những nước sản xuất trừu nhiều nhất và tốt nhất thế giới. Lông trừu ở đây được thế giới trân quí. Ở đây tỷ lệ dân số và trừu là 1/10, cứ mỗi người dân có 10 con trừu.
