Đến thăm thành phố thời cơn sót vàng Arrowtown gần Queenstown, vợ chồng tôi đã ghé nếm thử rượu nho (Wine Tasting) tại một cơ xưởng sản xuất rượu trong thung lũng Gibbston gần đó. Đặc biệt lắm. Trong lúc ở bắc bán cầu mùa thu lá vàng rụng đầy, ở đây là mùa xuân bông hoa nở rất đẹp.
Thung lũng Gibbston (Gibbston Valley) có nhiều hãng rượu nho, nổi tiếng nhất là “Gibbston Valley Wines“. Rượu nho hãng nầy đạt được nhiều giải thưởng. Cho tới nay hãng Gibbston Valley Wines đã đoạt được 300 giải thưởng trong nước và quốc tế. Vợ chồng tôi đã đến đây nếm thử rượu nho, ngon lắm.
Thung lũng Gibbston là một phần của lòng chảo Wakatipu (Wakatipu Basin) trong vùng Otego đảo Nam (South Island) của Tân Tây Lan. Sông Kawarau chảy dọc theo thung lũng nầy. Hẻm núi Kawarau cũng nằm ở đây.

Gibbston Valley (Thung lũng Gibbston) nằm trong vùng Otego, nổi tiếng là vùng rượu nho, với rất nhiều vườn nho và cơ sở sản xuất rượu nho. Giống như vùng Napa hay Sonoma ở Cali vậy. Thung lũng nầy nghiêng về hướng Bắc, nên hưởng nhiều ánh sáng mặt trời, khí hậu mát mẻ rất hợp với loại nho Pinot Noir.
Do đó rượu nho Pinot Noir sản xuất ở đây rất nổi tiếng, và ngon. Hãng Gibbston Valley vợ chồng tôi đến thử rượu đã đoạt được nhiều giải thưởng, và họ không ngại ngùng quảng cáo điều đó. Hầm rượu nho (Cave) của họ được đào sâu trong núi, nên giữ được nhiệt độ mát mẻ đều đều quanh năm. Vợ chồng tôi vô tận trong hầm này để nếm thử rượu.
Cả một bữa thử rượu, vợ chồng tôi chỉ nếm thử loại rượu Pinot Noir này thôi, đủ thứ năm và mùi vị, mỗi loại phải nhâm nhi với một loại cheese khác nhau. Thật là nhậu cũng phải học chớ không nhào vô uống theo lối “không sai không về” uốn ực ực không cần biết là ngon hay dở.
Vườn nho xưa nhất ở đây bắt đầu hoạt động vào năm 1851, mặc dầu rượu nho được sản xuất từ lúc bắt đầu thời thuộc địa. Tuy nhiên vườn nho và hãng Gibston Valley tương đối mới, chỉ mới hoạt động hơn 50 năm nay thôi. Và rượu nho cũa họ chỉ bán trong nước, chưa xuất cảng đi Mỹ.
