Khi đến thăm viếng thành phố Queenstown, vợ chồng tôi đã đi du thuyền thăm viếng Milford Sound, được độc giả của TripAdvisor bầu chọn là điểm đến du lịch hàng đầu trên thế giới vào năm 2008.
Đây là một phần của di sản thế giới Te Wahipounamu ở Tân Tây Lan. Milford Sound có nghĩa là Vịnh hẹp Milford. Đây là một Fjord (Vịnh Hẹp) với núi đá thẳng đứng do sông băng tạo ra trước đây. Con đường đi tới Milford Sound tuyệt đẹp, cũng là một phần của di sản thế giới này. Đây là một trong những con đường đẹp nhất thế giới. Tôi sẽ post riêng về con đường này sau.

Milford Sound là điểm đến du lịch nổi tiếng nhất Tân Tây Lan (New Zealand). Theo một nhà văn nổi tiếng của Anh là Rudyard Kipling, đây là “Kỳ quan thứ 8 của thế giới“.
Vợ chồng tôi đi du thuyền thăm viếng vùng này một ngày, vừa ăn trưa vừa ngắm cảnh núi đồi hùng vĩ và nên thơ. Giống như lúc thăm viếng Vịnh Hạ Long ở miền Bắc, mặc dầu núi non ở đây cao hơn và hùng vĩ hơn, khác hơn Vịnh Hạ Long.
Mặc dầu được gọi là “Sound” (Vịnh), Milford Sound không phải là Vịnh biển bình thường. Đây là loại “Fjord” (Vịnh Hẹp) giống như những Fjord ở Na Uy, do sông băng tạo nên trước đây. Fjord có nghĩa là Vịnh Hẹp hay Lạch Biển (Inlet) hai bên núi cao thẳng đứng. Vịnh Hẹp nối liền một Vịnh và Đại Dương.
Milford Sound nằm ở Tây Nam đảo Nam (South Island) của Tân Tây Lan (New Zealand). Nó nằm trong Vườn Quốc Gia Fiordland (Fiordland National Park), khu bảo tồn đại dương (Marine Reserve) Piopiotahi (Milford Sound), và di sản thế giới Te Wahipounamu.
Milford Sound còn được biết đến với tên Piopiotahi. Đây là tên do người thổ dân Maori đặt. Vịnh Hẹp nầy dài 15 cây số nối liền núi non miền Nam New Zealand với biển Tasman (Tasman Sea) ở cửa biến Dale.
Hai bên bờ Vịnh Hẹp này núi non cao thẳng đứng rất đẹp. Đỉnh “The Elephant” giống hình dạng đầu con voi cao 1,517 thước. Đỉnh “Sư Tử” (The Lion) giống hình dạng sư tử nằm cao khoảng 1,302 thước.
Milford Sound có hai thác nước đổ nước thường xuyên. Đó là thác “Lady Bowen” (Lady Bowen Falls) và thác “Stirling” (Stirling Falls). Nếu các bạn thăm viếng vùng này vào mùa mưa, ở đây có nhiều thác nước hơn, những thác mới này không chảy lâu và thường xuyên.

“Milford Sound (Piopiotahi trong tiếng Māori) là một vịnh hẹp ở phía tây nam của đảo Nam của New Zealand, trong vườn quốc gia Fiordland, khu bảo tồn đại dương Piopiotahi (Milford Sound), và địa điểm di sản thế giới Te Wahipounamu. Nó đã được đánh giá điểm đến du lịch hàng đầu thế giới trong một cuộc khảo sát quốc tế (của 2.008 du khách “Sự lựa chọn điểm đến giải thưởng bởi TripAdvisor) và được tuyên bố là điểm đến du lịch của New Zealand nổi tiếng nhất. Rudyard Kipling đã gọi là nó kỳ quan thứ tám của thế giới.
Milford Sound chạy 15 km nội địa từ Biển Tasman tại Điểm Dale – miệng của vịnh nhỏ – và được bao quanh bởi các mặt đá thẳng đứng cao 1.200 mét (3.900 ft) hoặc nhiều hơn về hai bên. Trong số các đỉnh núi có hình Con voi 1.517 mét, có hình dạng trông giống như đầu của một con voi, và Sư tử cao 1.302 mét (4.272 ft), trong hình dạng của một con sư tử cúi mình. Hai bên vách đá là hải cẩu, chim cánh cụt và cá heo thường xuyên các vùng biển và thỉnh thoảng có thể nhìn thấy cá voi. Milford Sound có hai thác nước chảy quanh năm, thác Lady Bowen và thác Stirling. Tuy nhiên sau đợt mưa to thì có hàng trăm thác tạm chảy theo các vách đá…”
